Christmas Traditions in Czech Republic

Christmas in the Czech Republic is celebrated much the same as it is in the United States. There are some differences that we will show below. One major difference is that a tradition is to throw a shoe over your shoulder and if it lands upward, you’ll be married during the year. Here is how the country celebrates.

Food – Carp is the main source of the food for Christmas Eve dinner. It is served both fried and in soup form.

Christmas Eve – Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration in the Czech Republic. The main dinner is served on this day.

Traditions – St. Nicholas Day is a day of major celebration. Different from many other areas, he is said to travel with both angels and devils, perhaps even the Zwarte Piet character.

Santa – Instead of Santa, kids in the Czech Republic believe in “Little Jesus”, a gift giver similar to the Christkindl. He leaves gifts for the children.
