The Caganer is one of the most interesting Christmas characters. He appeared in the mid 1800’s, and is depicted defecating in the corner of nativity scenes. The name translates roughly into “the crapper”. The caganer usually is depicted as a peasant with a red hat and his pants down.
This is usually only used in European areas, though it isn’t exactly widespread. The Catholic Church allows this practice, though, which is somewhat shocking.
