If you thought that SantaCon was a conferences where people who play Santa meet up, you are wrong! Well, maybe not, but it’s certainly not a conference. SantaCon is actually a pub crawl. The first SantaCon took place in 1994 in San Francisco. It was designed to be a one time event, initially called Santarchy, and was aimed at making fun of the actual holiday and the consumerism that has become heavily associated with it. In stayed dormant in 1995, but in 1996, one of the participants in Santarchy took to Portland, Oregon and then New York City to lead other Santa’s around the city caroling.
The idea spread into a pub crawl, and has become very popular. Both New York City and Los Angeles actually maintain websites for the even, which can be visited by clicking on the name of the city. The event has spread into multiple other cities, and even though there are some times riotous individuals which cause some types of property damage, the event actually does well in terms of raising money for charity.
There are two sites that keep tabs on SantaCon happenings: SantaCon.info and Santarchy, a Global Directory of SantaCon Events. As the 2017 events, typically held in early to mid-December, approach, ResearchChristmas will as well post a list of SantaCon events.
